Say a few words about Steve Ditko?
Very little encouragement needed there!
When I was a kid Ditko was the first artist I ever "noticed."
This was in the days of the "Big Monster" books Marvel was doing
before Spider-man and the FF showed up. I could easily spot his unique style
even at four years old. And I was devoted to his work instantly. I followed
his work from company to company. I stopped buying Marvels when he left
Spider-man because (although I had no way of KNOWING) I figured my hero had
gotten screwed somehow. Turns out I was closer to the truth than I realized
at the tender age of ten.
Heck, I wanted to BE Ditko. But no matter how I tried I couldn't
find the drawing talent in me. That's when I turned to writing.
I got to meet him one time in the Marvel offices in the '80s. It was
a short conversation about the use of sound effects in comics. He was very
gracious even though he certainly had no idea who I was.
