Back in early '66, Steve Ditko walked into the Marvel offices for the last time in his current run. He handed Sol Brodsky his last job, and said he was quitting Spider-Man, Dr. Strange and Marvel Comics. Broken promises and creative differences allegedly laid waste to this great partnership, but miracles of miracles, stats of pre-inked pages from that issue still exist today!
In Roy Thomas' ALTER EGO #9 (Jul '01), Roy published a pre-inked page (#5) from A.S. #38. Fascinatingly, it showed "Joe" with Batman-like spires on his head gear, instead of the helmet that ended up in the published version. The size of this pre-inked page in ALTER EGO was only two inches by three, and Roy offered to send me a (much larger) photocopy of page 5. A few weeks later, what shows up at my door, but the pre-inked SPLASH to Issue #38! What an amazing find!
