Page 10 - Pencils

While hardly the greatest photocopy in the world of Ditko's pencils, we are still able to see what Blyberg added, or altered. In Panel 1, Blyberg has enlarged Noman's eyes to rather rotund extremes. Ditko spots a black on the wall with a "x", and then tries to shade in the back of the purple monster in the middle of the panel, but Blyberg washes both with pure black. As is seemingly customary in the '80s, the inker is forced to be the one to give that "third dimension" - "rounding out" the form, as Ditko's pencils have rather flat black lines. One suspects, as was the case back in the '60s, Ditko added PLENTY of detail when he inked.
Blyberg deftly "reins in" the Wildey's face in Panel 3, and the letterer moved the "clik, clik" balloon for the finished version. Blyberg also smoothed out the lighting apparatus above the clik clik balloon. Credit Blyberg for holding his own on the bottom four panels. He does a good job retaining the Ditko feel of the two face close-ups. Ditko, as per usual, does not add a great deal of detail to characters' features in a long-shot, knowing the artwork will be reduced. The same is true in Panel 4 and it is a test of the inker's skills to make sure they don't all come out looking like mannequins.
Ditko's pattern in the '80s is clear. When he is not inking himself, he runs into trouble because he would add the detail in the inks. An inker really earns his chops working on a Ditko-pencilled job in this era.
