The
STEVE DITKO
SPACE WARS
Reprint Volume

The Vanguard Productions volume of '50s Ditko Charlton reprint material is here! It was released last month in both a hardcover version (on your left), priced $34.95 (B&W, 8 1/2 x 11" trim, ISBN: 1-887591-68-0) and a softcover (seen below) edition ($16.95, ISBN: 1-887591-67-2).

Web blogger Alan David Doane has posted A REVIEW of the volume on his web site, Comic Book Galaxy.

The publisher provided us with the Table of Contents when looking for help with all the particulars (title, issue #, date, etc.). Below are stories in the volume, ordered by job number (job numbers being the little numbers found generally in the first panel of the first page that comic companies used to keep track of what stories they gave out to what artists). I advised the publisher that Charlton would often receive a story back from Ditko and then put it on the shelf for up to almost a year before using it. You can see that below by the wildly different dates of publication. If I was doing a reprint volume - a "COMPLETE DITKO" if you will - I would definitely order the stories in this fashion to show the arc of Ditko's quickly developing style over the latter half of that decade. In the book's introduction, they did provide my list of stories ordered by job number so one could follow the evolution in Ditko's style through that period.

Not a bad collection, in terms of stories that have never been reprinted anywhere. There's a little too much emphasis on 1958-59 material (his weakest at Charlton, having returned to Marvel in the summer of 1958 and was put far more detail into that work, probably for much better pay. Ditko's Charlton work didn't match his Marvel work until 1960). If only a publisher was interested in getting serious about a "COMPLETE DITKO" series and would start from 1954 and do volumes chronologically without all the holes.
